Ho cominciato questa animazione tornato a Roma questa estate dopo tre settimane a Tokyo.
Avevo degli appunti su dei quaderni che mi portavo sempre in giro. Disegnavo molto i giapponesi che vedevo per strada e ripetitive Rokurokubi http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rokurokubi, e usavo il quaderno per spiegarmi quando quasi sempre mancava la parola. Lo consultavo più della mappa della metro e lo "offrivo" ovviamente spessissimo, Ci hanno scritto in Kanji nomi di personaggi dell horror tradizionale giapponese, disegnato il pesce che il cibo nel tuo piatto era stato, mappe per raggiungere appuntamenti.
Ne ho uno con un disegno di una cannuccia pieghevole, da mostrare all'emporio per spiegare che cercavo proprio quella. oppure di un cellulare che mi ha disegnato un ragazzino in metropolitana...io avevo le cuffiette e lui voleva avvertirmi a tutti i costi che mi avevano mandato un messaggio.
Il pezzo di Mulatu Astatke mi ha ispirato molto. L'ho sentito a Roma mentre stavo scansionando quegli appunti dei quaderni con l'idea di farne qualcosa. E' stato l'ispirazione e la guida per immaginare un video.

Sono attratto dalle metropoli per la sensazione di pienezza che emanano. Una concentrazione umana, in tutti i sensi. E Tokyo, in modo particolare, è così poco minimalista.Era fondamentale prendere appunti.

Venerdì 17 luglio u.s., all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura, il Direttore Umberto Donati insieme a Barbara Waschimps, responsabile della società “Beware of the wolves”, ha inaugurato una personale di Onze, nome d’arte di Stefano Centonze, artista che presenta a Tokyo un’interessante selezione di oltre 40 illustrazioni realizzate a partire dal 2007 e concepite come manifesti di film in realtà mai girati. In mostra anche i video di Alessandro Palazzi e Flemming Borgen.
L’illustratore vanta collaborazioni con importanti riviste e quotidiani italiani come “Il Manifesto”, “Vanity”, “Gambero Rosso”, “Corriere della Sera”, “La Repubblica” e “Internazionale, oltre che con editori come Mondadori, Feltrinelli e Laterza.
Onze, presente all’inaugurazione, ha incontrato il pubblico giapponese composto da giornalisti e appassionati d’arte.
Il quotidiano Senken Shimbun (tiratura di circa 200.000 copie al giorno) ha dedicato un’ampio servizio all’esposizione, così come un’interessante articolo è uscito, in occasione dell’apertura, su “Il Venerdì di Repubblica” del 17 luglio.
La mostra, curata da Ferruccio Giromini, è stata organizzata da questo Istituto e da “Beware of the Wolves” di Roma, in collaborazione con “Garde Italy”, la NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti) di Milano e con “Dei Mille” di Napoli ed è stata patrocinata dal Comune di Roma, dalla Fondazione Italia Giappone e dalla Regione Campania.
L’evento rientra nella serie di iniziative, organizzate da questo Istituto negli ultimi anni, volte alla presentazione e alla promozione in Giappone di artisti italiani contemporanei.
In concomitanza con l’esposizione, aperta al pubblico fino al 1 agosto, Onze è protagonista in questi giorni di altri due appuntamenti:
- Sabato 18 luglio p.v.: videoinstallazioni dell’artista al Fiat Cafè di Tokyo.
- Domenica 26 luglio p.v.: “live painting” presso lo store Citrus Notes di Roppongi Hills.
Si prevede, inoltre, la presentazione della Mostra anche a Niigata, in collaborazione con l’Associazione di Amicizia italo-giapponese della città.

L'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Tokyo ospita (18/7 - 1/8) la mostra "Humanized. Il volto, il corpo, la città" con opere del romano Onze, cioè Stefano Centonze. Illustratore da 20 anni, coniuga l'arte industriale e la manualità, con il graffiante impatto dell'affiche, della pubblicità; e contamina generi e linguaggi in uno stile immediato, dirompente, che fa parlare i soggetti dei loro problemi nel mondo globale. Sono esposte oltre 40 opere tematiche sul volto, il corpo, la città, tavole per l'editoria, e i lavori del progetto "Affiches per Cinecittà immaginaria", dove l'autore si deiverte ad associare un'immagine a un titolo di pellicola, perchè lo spettatore possa "farsi un altro film".

L'italiano che appende finte locandine in Giappone

Da ragazzino voleva disegnare le locandine dei film che, fino agli anni Settanta, erano ancora un misto di foto, illustrazioni e segni grafici. Poi, crescendo, Onze (il vero nome è Stefano Centonze), romano, 42 anni, è diventato un artista, ma la soddisfazione se l'è comunque voluta togliere. E ha realizzato una serie di manifesti di pellicole mai girate che, da domani e fino al 2 agosto, saranno esposti a Tokyo nella sede dell'Istituto italiano di cultura in Giappone.

«l miei genitori» dice Onze «mi vietavano di vedere gli horror e io, come per Profondo rosso, inventavo una trama a partire dalla loro pubblicità». Lo scopo di queste opere è un po' lo stesso: fare in modo che da un'immagine e da un titolo (Addicted, Cuore di fragola, L'ombra del tuo cane) il pubblico crei con la fantasia il proprio film. «A volte» dice l'artista «penso anche al cast, che però comprende attori di epoche diverse come Monica Bellucci e Errol Flynn».

La mostra giapponese, che si intitola Humanized. Il volto, il corpo, la città, raccoglie lavori di Onze degli ultimi due anni incentrati sulla figura umana («non sono però ritratti di persone reali») e su paesaggi urbani realizzati con un mix di tecniche che comprendono pittura, computer grafica e fotografia. «Quando realizzo le illustrazioni per le copertine di libri, per i giornali o per le campagne pubblicitarie» dice l'artista «devo tener conto del pubblico del prodotto. In queste opere, invece, sono più libero di esprimermi». E di diventare, come scrive Daniele Brolli nell'introduzione al catalogo della mostra, «un killer sadico dell'immaginario».

L'evento rappresenta un traguardo importante per la creatività italiana che porta nel Sol Levante uno dei suoi più eclettici e originali esponenti. La mostra, organizzata dall'Istituto Italiano di Cultura e dalla Beware of the Wolves di Roma in collaborazione con Garde Italy, con la NABA di Milano e con Dei Mille Napoli, con il Patrocinio del Comune di Roma, della Fondazione Italia Giappone e della Regione Campania, è curata da Ferruccio Giromini e sarà aperta al pubblico fino al 1 agosto. L'artista Stefano Centonze - che firma le sue opere come Onze - nella sua carriera ventennale si è distinto per la sua attività di illustratore, coniugando una rigorosa applicazione della tecnica con le esigenze dell'arte industriale, l'antica manualità con il graffiante impatto dell'affiche e della pubblicità. L'esito è uno stile contemporaneo, riconoscibile, capace di produrre efficaci contaminazioni fra tecniche e generi in un linguaggio immediato e dirompente. La mostra Humanized, che raccoglie le produzioni di Onze dal 2007 ad oggi, si concentra sui temi de 'il volto, il corpo, la citta», testimoniando la stretta aderenza dell'arte con la realtà contemporanea, nella forte volontà di parlare dell'umanità di oggi anche nelle sue problematiche sociali. «I volti, i corpi, i paesaggi di Onze partono dalle avanguardie storiche, e tornano indietro, ma allo stesso tempo - sottolinea Goffredo Fofi - sono di oggi, sono nostri, sono contemporanei, appartengono all'era che viene detta della globalizzazione». «I paesaggi industriali richiamano le periferie tedesche al tempo di Weimar (Radziwill) e più tardi quelle italiane al tempo di Mussolini (Sironi), i modi di dividere o sovrapporre, scomporre o comporre brani di forme e di colori (Rodcenko)». Le opere di Onze quando devono rispondere alle necessità della committenza, la interpretano non come limite bensì come «una sfida in cui il prodotto richiesto (copertina, illustrazione, manifesto ecc) dovrà innanzitutto essere funzionale al suo compito - spiega Giromini, curatore della mostra -, soddisfare le aspettative del cliente e, ultimo ma non ultimo, essere degnamente rappresentativo dello stile dell'autore»; in questa chiave la mostra allestita a Tokyo è una testimonianza di ricerca artistica non disgiunta dalla funzione sociale dell'opera. Caratteristica principale di Onze è la sintesi fra astrazione e utilità, fra coerenza ed eclettismo, fra stile personale e necessità commerciale che rendono la sua produzione artistica segno imprescindibile del tempo presente.
Nella sua opera, aggiunge Fofi, «la sua esplorazione è coerente, conseguente. È la spia di un'irrequietezza da cui chi è vivo non dovrebbe mai sentirsi escluso». La mostra propone un percorso che spazia dalle oltre 40 opere tematiche su volto, corpo e città, alle illustrazioni per l'editoria (riprodotte in video) che rispondono a una progettualità narrativa, fino al progetto Affiches per una Cinecittà immaginaria, dove l'artista - affascinato dai manifesti dei film illustrati da grandi cartellonisti come Nano, De Seta, Cesselon - si diverte ad associare un'immagine ad un titolo per lasciare allo spettatore il piacere e la curiosità di «farsi un altro film». Il percorso espositivo è arricchito dai video di Alessandro Palazzi e dell'artista danese Flemming Borgen che accompagnano il visitatore nell'arte e nel linguaggio di Onze. Onze (Stefano Centonze) vive e lavora a Roma, dove è nato nel 1967. Diplomato in pittura all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, pubblica le sue illustrazioni a partire dall'88. Collabora regolarmente dall'89 con il quotidiano Il Manifesto. Numerosi i suoi lavori apparsi sulle pagine di: Dolce Vita, Vanity, Rockstar, Gambero Rosso, Blue, Nessuno tocchi Caino, Internazionale, Linea d'ombra, Alias, Musica!!!, Bravacasa, Urban, Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Liberazione. Riceve nel '98 il premio de Lo straniero, legato all'omonimo trimestrale diretto da Goffredo Fofi. Dal '99 è illustratore del mensile Fuoriluogo, e dal 2001 del settimanale Donnamoderna. 都市は常に変化している。その中で営まれる行為も常に変化し続けている。それは始まりもなく、終わりもなく永遠に営まれる。オンゼ氏の作品は、その瞬間を切り出し、その断面を描き出そうとしている。それが実に巧妙に描き出されている。またその後に継続するであろう事も予見される。
建築もその時代の流れの中で切り出されたモノであると共に、永続するものである。そういう意味では共通する部分を持っている。
オンゼ氏の作品は、それをダイナミックに、且つ繊細に描き出している。特に人間と街の関係、人間の中に潜むモノを独特の技術で表現している。
建物の表面に見え隠れする顔が、街の営みを映し出しているが、街全体では静けさをも感じさせる。このコントラストを生み出しているモノが、彼の巧みな表現方法だ。

これが、今回、東京の九段下にあるイタリア文化会館で7月18日（土）から開催されるローマ出身のアーティスト、オンゼのモノグラフのタイトルです。この展覧会は、折衷派で独創的な代表者の一人オンゼが、日本にイタリアの創造性を紹介する大切な機会となります。
同展は、ローマ市そして伊日財団の後援を受け、イタリア文化会館、ギャルド・イタリー, ナバ（New Academy of Fine Arts）ミラノとビィウエア・オブ・ザ・ウルヴス社との提携により企画され、フェルッチョ・ジロミニ氏により監修されました。会期は8月1日までとなっています。

ステファノ・チェントンゼ（画家名　オンゼ）は20年間の活動の中でイラストレーターとして有名になりました。インダストリーアートの必要性とポスターや広告の持つ強烈なインパクトのある古典的な手法を厳密に取り入れています。その結果、破壊的で直接的な表現法とテクニックとの融合を可能とする同時代的なスタイルとなっています。

Movies that do not exist, posters. They date back to the desire of a child who looked at the colorful posters of films and dreamed of becoming a poster designer. And here is the final attempt to escape from his weaknesses through the use of irony, pathetic negotiation with which one keeps alive their own desires without admitting them. Let’s not expose ourselves, let’s expose our contradictions to public mockery, and this will let us continue to feed them without having to be ashamed of them. The irony as an attempt to not put ourselves into question: no one can accuse you of anything because you're ironic. You have distanced yourself.
Onze chose this Russian roulette: believes and doesn’t believe. He’s on the defensive in the moment he exposes his work: he launches the attack on himself and to others saying that there will be no survivors. His fake movies are a ritual slaughter, in which he brings into play his own coherence to avoid the vanity of being above the common feeling.

Humanized- the Face, the Body, the City is the title of the monographic exhibition dedicated to the Roman artist Onze - which will be inaugurated Saturday, July 18 in Tokyo at the prestigious seat of the Italian Institute of Culture in Kudanshita. The event represents an important goal for Italian creativity and brings to the land of the Rising Sun one of its most eclectic and original exponents. The exhibition, organized by the Italian Institute of Culture and Beware of the Wolves from Rome in collaboration with Garde Italy, with patronage by the Municipality of Rome and the Italy-Japan Foundation, and curated by Ferruccio Giromini, will be open to the public until August 1.
The Artist, Stefano Centonze - who signs his works with his shortened “Onze”, has marked his twenty plus year career by his illustrative activities, combining a rigorous application of technique with the demands of industry, the old manual with the biting effect of the affiche and advertising. The result is a contemporary style, recognizable and capable of producing effective contaminations between techniques and genres in an immediate and explosive language.
The exhibition offers a journey that spans more than 40 works by themes on face, body and city; llustrations for the book (reproduced in video) that meet a narrative project, and the project Affiches per una Cinecittà immaginaria (Posters for an Imaginary Cinecittà), where the artist - fascinated by posters of the films illustrated by large designers such as a Nano, De Seta, Cesselon - plays associating an image with a title to give the viewer the pleasure and the curiosity to "make another film. " The exhibition is enriched by video of Italian artist Alessandro Palazzi and Danish artist Flemming Borgen accompanying the visitor in the Onze art and language.

The exhibition, a collection of Onze’s productions from 2007 to today, focuses on the themes of 'the face, body, the city', testifying the close grip that art has with contemporary reality, in the strong desire to speak of today’s humanity and its social issues. "Onze’s faces, bodies and landscapes depart from the historical avant-garde, and return, but at the same time -- stresses the intellectual Goffredo Fofi - they are today, they are our own, they are contemporary and belong to the age which is called the globalization". "Industrial landscapes recall the suburbs at the time of the German Weimar (Radziwill) and later, those of Italian Mussolini’s era (Sironi). The ways in which he divides or overlaps, decomposes or composes songs of shapes and colors recall Rodcenko”. When the works of Onze must answer to satisfy the needs of clients, the works aren’t interpreted as a limitation but as "a challenge in which the product required (cover, illustration, poster, etc.) must first be appropriate to its task - says Giromini, curator of the exhibition – then meet customer expectations and, last but not least, be a worthy representation of the artist’s style "; in this light the exhibition in Tokyo is a testimony of the researched art that is not detached from the social function of the work. Onze’s main characteristic is the synthesis between abstract and utility, between coherence and eclecticism, between personal style and business needs that will make his artistic works a vital sign of present time. In his work, adds Fofi, "his exploration is coherent, consequent. It is the light of restlessness from which those who are alive should never feel excluded".

"Onze’s personal, expressive style – a mix of techniques which are always figurative technical but with abstract tendencies – is able to be, at the same time pleasantly classic and excitingly innovative. Surprisingly his composite disharmony, purposefully done, results very harmonic. His color combinations, being audacious and daring, are revealed to be quite successful. His homage to the usual, traditional “romantic” Italian illustration are simultaneously balanced with a light background and affectionate irony. His pictorial culture is blended with intelligence with regards to the functionality of the illustration, while his illustrative expression remains a passionate testimony of a highly worthy pictorial."

Onze (Stefano Centonze) lives and works in Rome, where he was born in 1967. His illustrations have appeared in Dolce Vita, Vanity, Rockstar, Gambero Rosso, Blue, Nessuno tocchi Caino, Internazionale, Linea d'ombra, Alias, Musica!!!, Bravacasa, Urban and Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Liberazione, Il manifesto. In 1998, he received the annual award Lo straniero by Goffredo Fofi's quarterly publication of the same name.
In 1999 he became the illustrator for the monthly publication Fuoriluogo and in 2001, the weekly Donnamoderna. His work has been exhibited in Rome, Genova and Parma.
His illustrations have been used in advertising campaigns for Roman Summer '98, Renault Clio (both by Saatchi & Saatchi), Toscano Immobiliare (by Young & Rubicam) and Noi Donne (by Ambrosio & Maloni). He has also designed bookcovers for the publishers Mondadori and Feltrinelli. He's the illustrator for the bookcovers of the series Contromano by Laterza. His illustrations consist of various techniques such as pencil, acrylic paint, collage, photography, paintbrush and computer.
